   Why self-hosted rather than the Google Fonts CDN:

   1. Layout shift. Loading the font from fonts.gstatic.com meant the page
      first painted in a fallback face and then reflowed when Inter arrived.
      Lighthouse attributed the article page's entire 0.123 CLS to a single
      cause: "Web font loaded". Served from our own origin the file is
      already in flight with the CSS, and it can be preloaded from a stable
      URL — a Google Fonts URL contains a version hash that changes without
      notice, so it cannot be safely preloaded.

   2. One less origin. The CDN route cost a DNS lookup, TLS handshake and
      round trip to two extra hosts (fonts.googleapis.com for the CSS, then
      fonts.gstatic.com for the file) before any text could settle.

   These are VARIABLE fonts: one file covers the whole 300–900 range that
   the site uses, so seven weights cost one 48 KB download instead of seven.

   The latin-ext face is listed second and only claims the characters latin
   does not; the browser downloads it solely when such a character actually
   appears (accented names in copy), so most page loads never fetch it.
