NNA News - Ghana has taken a step towards cleaner industrial transport with the launch of locally assembled electric dump trucks, a development that could support Africa's broader transition to low-emission transport and sustainable industrialisation. The vehicles were unveiled on Thursday by Zonda Tec Ghana Limited, a Chinese-owned automobile assembly and distribution company, during a launch ceremony in Tema.

The HOWO V7X electric dump trucks are manufactured by Chinese commercial vehicle maker Sinotruk and assembled in Ghana. They are equipped with a 340-kilowatt electric motor producing 462 horsepower and a four-speed automated manual transmission (AMT). The launch comes as African countries increasingly explore electric mobility to reduce carbon emissions, lower operating costs and support the transition to cleaner transport systems.

Speaking at the launch, Zonda Tec Ghana General Manager Fan Dongyun said the company aims to contribute to Ghana's industrial development while expanding the adoption of green transport technologies. "We are entering a new era, an era of smart mobility, green energy, and industrial transformation. Green energy is not a luxury for West Africa but a necessity and an opportunity for us," Fan said.

She said the company is investing in local vehicle assembly and supporting industrial cooperation between Ghana and China. Sinotruk Sales Manager for Ghana, Togo, Benin and Niger, Tong Chengxu, said the electric dump trucks were designed to improve fleet efficiency while reducing environmental impact and operating costs for construction companies. The first fleet was purchased by Ghanaian civil engineering company Big Aidoo Construction Limited shortly after the launch.

Company representative Wisdom Hedidor said the adoption of electric heavy-duty vehicles could help transform Ghana's construction industry and encourage wider uptake across the sector. "We are also going to advocate for other partners in the construction industry to join us in the introduction of electric trucks in the sector so, together, we can make Ghana an industrial green hub," Hedidor said.

As African economies pursue cleaner energy and sustainable infrastructure development, the introduction of electric heavy-duty vehicles is expected to contribute to efforts to modernise transport while reducing emissions from the construction and mining sectors.
