NNA News - A magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Friday, with tremors felt in several communities but no tsunami warning issued, according to seismic authorities and the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.

The earthquake occurred at 15:35 local time, approximately 161 kilometres from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the region’s largest city, at a reported depth of 127.8 kilometres, the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said.

Tremors were felt in parts of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Ust-Kamchatsky, Aleutsky, Vilyuchinsk and Yelizovsky, according to the emergency ministry.

No injuries or infrastructure damage had been reported in the initial assessment.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre also recorded the earthquake at magnitude 6.9, placing it approximately 146 kilometres south-south-west of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The United States tsunami warning system reported a magnitude of 7.0 and confirmed that no tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat was in effect.

Differences in preliminary magnitude and depth estimates can occur as monitoring agencies analyse seismic data.

Kamchatka lies in a seismically active part of the north-western Pacific, where the movement of tectonic plates generates frequent earthquakes. Authorities continue to rely on seismic monitoring and emergency assessments to evaluate potential risks to communities and infrastructure.
