NNA News – The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has recorded more than 1,000 confirmed Ebola cases as health authorities warn that the outbreak continues to spread through affected communities. According to the latest report released by the country's health authorities, the number of confirmed Ebola infections has risen to 1,048, including 267 deaths. The figures cover data collected up to Sunday and reflect a steady increase in cases since the outbreak was declared last month.

Health officials reported that 371 patients are currently in isolation or receiving treatment in healthcare facilities, while 112 people have recovered from the disease. Authorities also identified 202 suspected cases, including 60 deaths, as investigations continue to determine whether they are linked to the outbreak. The overall case fatality rate currently stands at 25.5 percent.

Public health officials warned that the outbreak remains active, with confirmed cases continuing to rise week after week. The latest assessment indicates ongoing community transmission, raising concerns that the virus could spread to additional areas if containment measures are not strengthened. "The number of confirmed cases has continued to rise week by week," the report noted, warning that rapid geographic expansion remains possible without prompt public health interventions.

The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a less common variant that has previously caused outbreaks in Uganda and the DRC. The Congolese Ministry of Health officially declared the outbreak on 15 May 2026. The latest figures underscore the ongoing challenges facing health authorities as they work to contain the virus in regions already affected by displacement, insecurity and limited healthcare infrastructure.

International health agencies continue to support surveillance, treatment and community awareness efforts aimed at slowing transmission and preventing further loss of life.
