Brazil’s Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, said on Monday (23) that strengthening the national defense industry could generate positive spillover effects across several strategic sectors of the Brazilian economy. The statements were reported by Brasil 247, based on coverage by Sputnik Brasil.
Alckmin spoke during the launch of the Defense Industrial Base (BID) Product Catalog at the Ministry of Defense headquarters in Brasília. The document brings together 364 products from 154 companies and is presented by the government as a tool to expand markets, stimulate innovation, and consolidate national industry as a strategic axis of development.
Highlighting the sector’s role, Alckmin stated that the defense industry extends beyond the military sphere and has strong technological spillover capacity. According to him, expanding this productive base can boost areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and science, contributing to broader economic advancement.
During the event, the vice president emphasized the relevance of the sector to Brazil’s reindustrialization strategy. In one of his main remarks, he said: “A strong defense industry is a life insurance policy for the nation and a driver for Nova Indústria Brasil.”
The minister’s assessment aligns with the Nova Indústria Brasil (NIB) policy, which seeks to restore the country’s productive capacity through innovation, sustainability, and value-added production. Within this framework, the defense industry is treated as a structural pillar capable of generating qualified jobs, strengthening supply chains, and increasing Brazil’s international competitiveness.
The government also highlighted the role of institutions such as BNDES, Finep, and Embrapii in supporting the sector through financing and incentives for research and development. The stated objective is to consolidate an innovative, sustainable, competitive, and export-oriented industrial base, expanding Brazil’s presence in global markets
