NNA News – South Africa’s 2026 World Cup campaign began with disappointment on Thursday as Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in front of more than 80,000 fans at a sold-out Estadio Azteca. Red cards to Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane left South Africa to play the final 20 minutes with nine players. The result leaves Bafana at the bottom of Group A and needing points from matches against Czechia and South Korea to keep qualification hopes alive.

Mexico took the lead in the ninth minute when Julian Quiñones capitalised on a defensive lapse. The hosts dominated possession and created a string of chances, with captain Ronwen Williams forced into several saves before half-time. The game turned five minutes after the restart when Sithole was shown a second yellow for bringing down Brian Gutierrez. Reduced to 10 men, South Africa held their shape for 20 minutes before Raúl Jiménez headed in a Roberto Alvarado cross in the 67th minute. A second dismissal late on left Bafana with nine players.

Hugo Broos expressed sympathy for both dismissed players.“It’s not nice for both players if you get a red card in the first game of the World Cup. The first red card, I believe, is justifiable, but the second, I think we can discuss because it is the Mexican player who blocked my player,” Broos told reporters.

The home crowd at times booed Mexico’s lack of cutting edge while applauding South Africa’s defensive effort. Javier Aguirre acknowledged his side had lacked sharpness. “We had 16 chances, but did not convert them. We weren't sharp in the final third,” Aguirre admitted. Aguirre argued Mexico should have won more comfortably.“We could have easily won 3-0, and nobody could have said anything. They only managed one shot from two metres from the goal,” he said.

Aguirre welcomed the result but emphasised the need for improvement before Mexico faced Czechia. “To start the game with a victory, I think it’s a good thing. We can improve, of course, and we must,” he said. Broos stressed that for Bafana Bafana, the step up in level was the main challenge. “I don’t think it’s a drop in standards of my players; it’s just that this level is much higher. I saw a desperate Mexico in some moments in the game; they didn’t know what to do with the ball,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Broos said the defensive structure would remain for matches against Czechia and South Korea, but the attack needed to improve. “I think this is something to improve in the next few days, and I’m sure we can play the same game but be better offensively,” he added. Recovery will be the focus with a seven-day turnaround before South Africa meets Czechia in Guadalajara.“There are still seven days before the next game. I think we need the next two days to recover from the disappointment of today and also the fatigue. Then the guys will be ready for good training. The goal remains the same as it was a week ago: that we would like to survive the group stages,” Broos said.
